WHAT IS PILATES? |
WHO
CAN STUDY PILATES?
Pilates is a system of exercises designed to strengthen the core muscles
of the abdomen, back and hips while improving flexibility. It is effective
and safe as a primary exercise regimen for adults of any age. It is not
appropriate for children or young teens. Used for years by dancers to
maintain strength and flexibility it has also been recognized by physical
therapist and orthopedists as beneficial in post rehab conditions. The
workout leaves one feeling refreshed, stretched and energized. The result
of continued study is a toned and supple body.

JOSEPH PILATES
Joseph Pilates had a lifelong interest in body conditioning, seeking ways
to strengthen his own. As a nurse in World War I, he began experimenting
with spring resistance attached to hospital beds. These experiments lead
to his design for the Universal Reformer. In 1923 he moved to the United
States and began teaching his system which he continued to refine and
practice himself until his death at age 86 in 1967.
