Fitness Focused on You

  • HomeFitness for your whole body, not just part of it. [hr_shadow] Some workouts build strength. Some build bulk. Some increase heart rates. Pilates training at The Pilates Fitness Studio builds your whole body – and your mind as well. Using your mind to control your muscles, you increase not only strength but also flexibility, balance, stamina, coordination, freedom of movement – and self-confidence. Pilates training helps dancers to control their extreme flexibility, people recovering from injuries to regain full physical function, and anyone to overcome pains and stiffness that sedentary modern life brings on. At the Pilates Fitness Studio, you get all the benefits of Pilates training, because we faithfully follow [link to Instructor] the method Joseph Pilates perfected – a method including over 500 specialized exercises using specially designed apparatus and blending Eastern traditions of breathing, precision and flexibility with Western strength and endurance training principles. Because each Pilates exercise pits one group of muscles against another and demands mental focus and precision, a Pilates workout helps to accomplish more with fewer repetitions. That – along with our personal , motivating, friendly instruction –is why most of our clients have been with us year after year after year. You perform fewer, more precise movements, paying attention to control and form. Because this requires your mind to work with your body, you experience awareness of muscle function and control instead of drudgery and boredom. Different people enjoy Pilates exercise for different reasons – dancers to improve their balance and poise, people with aches, pains and stiffness to move freely and painlessly again, people who’ve been injured to speed their complete recovery, and people who’ve grown bored with the mindless repetition of working out on machines at impersonal health clubs. At The Pilates Fitness Studio, you never waste time waiting for your turn at a treadmill or stairmaster. For one thing, we don’t use that equipment – only special exercise apparatus that Joseph Pilates developed for his system. • Testimonials“Strength and confidence to be fit for the life I want to lead” When I came to the Pilates Fitness Studio seven years ago, I could not sit up straight and couldn’t stand on a concrete floor for more than 10 minutes without severe pain. Three years prior, I had ruptured a disc, but despite surgery, was still in a low level of constant pain. I felt pretty weak and vulnerable. Within a few weeks, I was feeling less pain. Within a few months, I felt stronger, pain free, and was able to start cardio training. Each year, I have added more intensity to my fitness training, always keeping two Pilates classes a week as my anchor. Several of the Pilates stretches improved my lung capacity. I also have asthma, but now I suffer far fewer attacks and the severity is minimal. That helped change the internal dialog that told me I couldn’t run. Five years ago, I started running, and completed the Monument Avenue 10K. Last year, at age 51, I ran the Richmond Half Marathon. Ultimately, I lost a little over 25 pounds. Throughout the process, Pam England has nurtured me, corrected my form to help me prevent injuries, and helped me to know and to push my limits. The training at the Pilates Fitness Studio has given me strength and confidence to be fit for the life I want to lead. Mary Gardner-Stanley Weidmuller “I am always challenged, both mentally and physically.” When I first started taking classes with Pam England at Pilates Fitness in 2002, I was suffering from near-constant muscle spasms in my neck and shoulders, and I was unable to lie flat on my back at night because of sciatica problems and lower back pain. After religiously taking two classes a week with Pam, I quickly found relief and no longer suffer from any of these problems. I am always challenged by the Pilates classes, both mentally and physically. My posture, strength and flexibility are greatly improved. And, I can report from experience, I always get a great night’s sleep on Pilates’ nights. As an instructor, Pam knows Pilates backwards and forwards. She knows when to push and when to back off. I have seen her work effectively with many clients with injuries or those recovering from orthopedic surgeries. With her depth of experience as a dancer and her knowledge of anatomy, she is a highly skilled and professional teacher and coach. She is demanding but patient, firm but fun. I always tell people that it’s simple – if you just commit to regular doses of Pilates (especially with Pam England), it will rejuvenate you and change your life for the better. Trudi Allcott
